About Dr Shazia Khan

Dr Shazia Khan is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Neuroscience and Cardiovascular Research (INCR), University of Edinburgh, where she leads the Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) Group within the Mass Spectrometry Core at the Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility (CRF). After her Ph.D. in Natural Products Chemistry, in 2009, from H. E. J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, Pakistan, she became an Assistant Professor at the COMSATS Institute Pakistan till 2010. During 2011-2014, Shazia has worked as a research assistant at Bioscience Department - Swansea University on fungal secondary metabolites analysis by GCMS and as a visiting scholar at Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS) on LCMS based metabolomics profiling. In 2014, she joined the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Cardiovascular Science (CVS), Queen's Medical Research Institute (QMRI), as Postdoctoral Researcher. Working with Prof Ruth Andrew, she played a key role in establishing and developing MSI capabilities within the Mass Spectrometry Core. Dr Khan currently manages advanced MSI technologies, providing access and training for researchers, supervising PhD students and postdoctoral scientists, and contributing to a wide range of collaborative projects. Her research focuses on mass spectrometry imaging and LC–MS–based metabolomics and lipidomics, with particular interest in spatial analysis of biomolecules in tissues for biomarker discovery.

About Prof. William Griffiths

Bill received his BSc and PhD in Chemistry from University College, Cardiff (Wales, UK). He was trained in biomedical mass spectrometry at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. Bill has held academic positions in Kingston Jamaica, Stockholm Sweden and London England. In 2007 Bill moved to Swansea University in Wales to take the Chair of Mass Spectrometry. Bill’s research interests are in cholesterol biosynthesis and metabolism, particularly pathways of bile acid biosynthesis. Bill works closely with long term collaborator Professor Yuqin Wang, and the focus of their group’s work is on the involvement of cholesterol metabolites in biology particularly in the context of rare diseases. When living in the Caribbean, Bill played international rugby for Jamaica.
