About L. Ashley Cowart, PhD
Professor and Chair, Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Genetic Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine
L. Ashley Cowart, PhD, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Cellular, Molecular, and Genetic Medicine in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, a member of the Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center Cancer, and director of the Lipidomics and Metabolomics Shared Resource (LMSR). Her research interests are in bioactive lipid signaling, and more specifically, how alterations in bioactive lipids in disease alter cell metabolism. Her recent work has addressed atypical sphingolipids generated through altered acyl-CoA utilization by serine palmitoyltransferase. Dr. Cowart obtained her BS in Biology from Furman University (Greenville, SC) and her PhD in Biochemistry from Vanderbilt University (Nashville, TN). She did a postdoctoral fellowship with Yusuf Hannun, MD, at the Medical University of South Carolina and stayed on as faculty. She was recruited to VCU in 2017. She is a member of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the American Heart Association. She is also a Research Career Scientist with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
