Comment typeDescription
Catalytic ActivityPalmitoyl-CoA + H(2)O = CoA + palmitate.
FunctionAcyl-CoA thioesterases are a group of enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to the free fatty acid and coenzyme A (CoASH), providing the potential to regulate intracellular levels of acyl-CoAs, free fatty acids and CoASH. Seems to be involved in intraperoxisomal regulation of acyl-CoA levels, but not CoASH levels. Mainly active on medium-chain acyl- CoAs. May have a function in termination of beta-oxidation of fatty acids. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15007068}.
InductionIn the liver and kidney, by peroxisome proliferator, via the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) and by fasting.
SimilarityBelongs to the C/M/P thioester hydrolase family. {ECO:0000305}.
Subcellular LocationPeroxisome.
Tissue SpecificityHighly expressed in spleen, brain, testis and proximal and distal intestine; expressed at low level in the liver. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:15007068}.
